Please read applicable FAQ and notes on our hospitality.

The ability to share our facilities in this beautiful part of southern Thailand is rewarding to us and hopefully to you; our guests. We are happy to share our knowledge of the local areas and look forward to interaction with you.  If there is anything we can do better – please let us know.

Kaiyum Retreat

Kaiyum Retreat (named after the mountain nearby) has been an Airbnb residence for approx. 2 years it was originally built from trees cut down on the property L before we bought it. Since buying the rubber block and small house we have

·         Added the kitchen area

·         Renovated the bathroom as much as we can

·         General upgrading and improvements – such as knocking down the wall in the bedroom and adding mosquitoes screens; driveways etc

·         Started to plant out the rubber block with local hardwood trees

The location is future proofed and that was the reason we bought the property ie without strict planning laws; in Thailand, you can never be sure what development will pop up beside you, The property is at the end of the road and has surrounding saltwater mangroves. Therefore is far from the usual Thai hustle and bustle. The silence can be deafening! The property next door has a Norwegian enclave of 3 houses- This came about when the owner “Teng & Keow” saved some Norwegians on Phi Phi Island during the tsunami event The Norwegians felt indebted and had nothing to lose when building a house on his property. Since then other family members have built houses there also.

We would sleep with the window shutters open to promote ventilation (mosquito screens closed)

The Kaiyum Airbnb rental is working out well as can be seen with our guest reviews and we are glad to have the incentive to keep the house and facilities well maintained and clean while giving you the opportunity to share in our Thai experience. Welcome & Enjoy!!

Food / Catering

The house is offered as self-catering but you should find a selection of condiments to add /aid with cooking in the kitchen cabinet – We encourage stopping off at the supermarket on your arrival; so you can arrive with your preferred foods and drinks. We do try to keep a stock of basic items and alcohol so if you require anything please ask us.

Please manage food waste promptly and don’t leave any food out overnight as this will encourage bush rats and as cute as they are – they don’t win us good reviews  J

Gas

If the kitchen gas runs out give us a call or text and we will replace it as soon as possible.

House Water Supply

The 20ltr drum and red rainwater tanks (outside) are good for cooking and drinking. There is a gravity fed water pipe (from the red jars outside) located in the kitchen beside the aluminium bench which works ok when the jars are full; also there are taps in the garden just downhill from the tanks which are also gravity fed – use these if the local water supply stops. The house domestic water is from local government supply and is good quality and high pressure. The valve to turn the water off/on is the large one (1”) at entrance gate. The shower has an electric hot water heater

Mosquitoes

We have had some guests who are very sensitive to mosquitoes and appear to attract them. Therefore guests who have problems with mosquitoes should be aware that the mosquitoes are more prevalent 1hr before dusk and 1 hr after dusk- In these times apply repellent and cover up as applicable. Infrequently we get a more mosquitoes than usual; due to favourable breeding conditions. These events are rare and last a few days.

Certainly throughout the day we would keep the house doors open if home; but in the evening we recommend shutting the doors so as to avoid mosquitoes inside while you’re sleeping.

Please use mosquito spray; coils and repellent if required

Rubbish

There is no rubbish collection service, so we try to manage our rubbish as follows

plastic bottles

aluminium tin & metal

glass

1.    Recycle

Please recycle aluminium cans; steel tins plastic & glass bottles by putting them in the three bags against the wall - let us know if the bags or rubbish needs to be collected.

Clean plastic bags are put in the side board drawer for other uses & recycling.

2.    Organic matter;

Please use the stainless steel “wet bin” for organic matter and empty daily. We just walk to the edge of the garden and tip the wet bin out (Over the drop-off along garden perimeter) - includes organic matter such as vegetable peels & meat & fish scraps. Shell fish shells & crab shell etc - please try to separate – we just throw them onto the driveway to allow the cars to crush the shells - Our poultry will eat the grit & calcium. (No oil please)

3.    Rubbish –

Contaminated plastic; food wrapping and items not organic or recyclable – please put in the green rubbish bin; when full or in need of empting please let us know.

House Keeping

The housekeeping is usually performed before and after your visit – During longer visits we will send a gardener there to tidy around the outside of the house. There should be cleaning gear available –mobs and brooms and cleaning liquids etc. if not let us know. The washing machine is straight forward to use – just make sure the water inlet tap is turned on. There are rope lines around outside or use the rack inside if raining

Lights

We encourage the use of the outdoor LED flood lights at night – feel free to leave selected lights on overnight but please turn them off during the day.

Wifi

Mobile phone providers Dtac & AIS GSM data packages work well at Kaiyum

For large downloads/uploads please see ecovilla close by

TV / Sounds

The TV is connected to a Thai free to air satellite, so no much use to you unless you can speak Thai, however, you can play avi/mpeg4 movies via a USB chip on the DVD player.

Bluetooth. While in the dining room look for YJHiFi on your computer/ phone / ipad –eg Settings/ Bluetooth ;              Connect to YJHiFi to play your media via Bluetooth.

Wildlife

At times we have been told of cats and mangrove monkeys around – We don’t want to encourage either so please don’t feed them.

Rubber Tappers

On days with no rain we have a couple of rubber tappers; who come in the very early morning to cut the rubber trees; they are usually gone by the time you wake up and the trees finished dripping raw latex into the cups. The tappers will collect the congealed raw latex about once every 10 days for sale

They get 45% and we get 55% of the sale price – Current prices of raw rubber latex are very low ie 20bht/kg and that’s why many people are cutting down their rubber trees and trying to diversify into other cash crops.

Shopping

1.    NaiSa Local Market (4.6km away)

The local fresh market is twice weekly (Approx. 2pm to 05:30pm) and worth a visit (Don’t go before lunch the sellers don’t arrive until after lunch)

·         Wednesday

·         Saturday

The market is good for fresh chicken; fish; vegetables; fruit; eggs; herbs and curry paste etc. Some limited beef and pork in a corner stall ie it is a local market. For some of our guests it was a highlight and they enjoyed both the interaction with the locals and cooking up the produce at home. There is no milk; bread; cereal; yoghurt; juice etc

2.    Makro Supermarket  (12km away) (Four ATM machines)

Makro supermarket is about 10km away on the main Hwy 4. The supermarket has the largest range of goods in Krabi and caterers to hotels and walk in customers. Some items only sold in bulk. If you need to go to Makro – Let us know - We will try to synchronise shopping trips to as we usually go at least once a week.

Beware there is set times to buy alcohol ie 11am to 2pm and after 5pm - the alcohol restrictions apply to Makro; 7/11; Big C stores etc but not the average corner store

3.    Local NaiSa Shops in the village (2.6km away) Two ATM machines – working more frequently these days

There are at least two shops in NaiSa village which have fresh food daily from the Krabi central market. It would be easy to pass by these shops and not know what they are selling so ask directions prior to shopping in the village – Local stores also sell beer & limited sprits. (Thai whiskey) which are not subject to the time restrictions listed above

Restaurants

1.    Local NaiSa Shops  (4.6km away)

In the morning (early) in the village many stalls sell Thai sweets fried chicken and rice dishes

David and Nim are great hosts - very helpful and responsive. We enjoyed staying in their little house. And yes, you need a car or scooter. David can help you with it.

Very nice and quiet place in the woods, far from any touristic noise and tourists in general. The surrounding nature is really beautiful and often all you hear are the animal sounds from everywhere. The house is equipped with everything you need; you can cook for yourself on a gas stove and have a good and spacious fridge. There are bed and sofa you can sleep on and enough space to sling a hammock. You have access to rainwater for drinking which tastes way better than Nestlé's bottled water and is ethically sustainable;) You will definitely need some kind of vehicle for transportation if you want so leave the place for visits, shopping etc. but those are easy affordable so that is not a problem. You are almost entirely surrounded by natives that are really nice and friendly and you are not likely to see many tourists in a radius of 15 km. So if you are looking for some private space apart from touristic action and do not want to be dependent on eating out or actually anything, this is the place to be. Of course you should not be afraid of animals of all kinds that occur in nature and might say 'Hello' sometimes but are not harmful. I cannot tell anything about the television except that you should not watch TV. So wherever you come from, if you live here for a certain time you will return with an added dimension of serenity. I recommend it! Cheers PS: If you are looking for a gym you will be disappointed in either price, equipment or both, so be creative:)

David and Nim are extremly kind people! They helped us with everything we needed! We did a meditation retreat at this beautiful wooden house. Its definitly one of the highlights of our travels! Its for nature lovers! Its in a quiet area with a beautiful surrounding. There is everything you need to feel at home! (Kitchen, laundry, mosquitonet, ventilator, enaugh space for all the belongings.. and much more!) Its an excellent spot for hicking and to escape from the tourist mass.. What you will not have is a TV and thats good like that in my opinion! Also there is no hot water what did NOT disturb me at all.. I would go back everytime it was amazing! Thank you!
