A few reviews

November 2017

The stay at David and Nim's Eco farm was, without exaggeration, life changing. I saw the photos of the geese, the farms, the fish ponds, the mountain landscape, the creek. I saw the long list of 5 star reviews. Although it was pricey compared to some other places in Krabi, I thought it would be what I was looking for - A quiet place away from it all where I can focus on art and maybe do a bit of fishing. The Eco farm delivered on these expectations...and over 17 days, touched me in life altering ways that's hard to describe. What I expected: - A scenic retreat away from civilization - Occasionally mingle with the hosts - If I'm lucky, catch a fish or two. What I got (over 17 days): - A scenic retreat away from civilization - Hung out with the hosts almost every day. And 2 awesome kids on the weekends. - I caught fish. Really delicious and unique fish you can get in US. Total caught: 4 x Sea Bass, 2 x Snakeheads, 2 x Gourami including a 11 pound monster Gourami that Joy/David fried for us. - Mountain biking through the jungle - Sea Kayaked through Mangrove forest - Kayaked a class 3? creek through their own creek/jungle - Bar hopping to live music. - Nightly ping pong tournaments. - Feed/hang out with a wild Gibbon. (Miss you, Kaiyum!) - Swimming in a creek at night. - Took a jungle cruise through rivers on a speedboat - Wake boarded - Leveled up Thai culture - Marooned on a tropical island (True story) to the most epic sunset - Celebrated with the family to a floating lantern festival - Rock climbed Spirit Mountain I did end up doing art, but my self discovery came from being adopted by the family rather than just the drawings. I realize most AirBnB guests are not looking to interact this much with a host. Consider my review an extreme case that highlights the unique experience of the Eco Farm and the level of kindness and resourcefulness that David and Nim are willing to provide. If you're looking to relax on a farm and be left alone, you will relax and be left alone. If you're looking to get the most out of adventure and life in Krabi, Thailand, there's no better way than to live with Nim, a Thai local and David, who has lived and thrived here for 30+ years. Here's me raising a can of CHANG to the most awesome hosts I've had the pleasure of staying with. See you soon, David, Nim, Kasem, Nirun, Tara, Naija, Kaiyum, Harry, and all you damn Gouramis!

David and Nim are as good as hosts get. The accommodation is great but that was only the beginning. The environment they have created is amazing and the area offers something for everyone. We loved this place and can’t wait to go back! It exceeded our expectations. Perfect.

January 2018

This is the best place to stay in Krabi area if you like tranquility, nature and beautiful surroundings. David and his family are the kindest people and lovely hosts. Not only very warm and friendly people but also very helpful! They gave us so much useful information during our stay, what made everything very relaxed and easy going. They were always around or reachable if we had any question and helped us to arrange some tours. The house itself is beautiful and has all facilities you need. The view from the terrace makes you wake up early and see the sunrise and listen to all the beautiful birds sing. The motorbikes you can rent from David are very handy in the area, if you like to go around, which you should because its stunning! For a longer daytrip we rented the car and all transport facilities are in good condition. David and Joy thanks again for this lovely stay, we hihgly recommend you!!

March 2018

This place is absolutely fantastic. It's a little out of the way from the touristy stuff(~20-30 min drive on motorbike), which was exactly what we were looking for. David is cool and very helpful with recommendations in the area, and with getting around. The views at this place are incredible. Even driving from place to place was a treat. We only stayed 3 nights, and wished it could have been longer. We would love to come back again!

Please read applicable FAQ and notes on our hospitality.

The ability to share our facilities in this beautiful part of southern Thailand is rewarding to us and hopefully to you; our guests. We are happy to share our knowledge of the local areas and look forward to interaction with you.  If there is anything we can do better – please let us know.

Ecovilla – Short History

Ecovilla house is 45 years old – The land was bequeathed by a local area chief to the then Krabi governor who built the house by copying the governor’s official residence? In Krabi town but on a smaller scale. The house was falling in to neglect when we happened upon it in 2002 and fortunately the ex-governor was desperate to sell. It had been on the market for quite a while and with no one was interested, he decided to change the land title into his wife’s name in an effort to bring good luck – Within a month we had made contact with him and made a contract of sale. He is convinced to this day the changing of title name was the reason for the sale. At that time the property was planted out with approx. 200 oil palms and the creek lowlands back filled – prior to his early development of the property, rice was grown in the flood /swamp area along the creek ie and right across the road. There was a rudimentary farm house situated down by the large tamarind tree near the wood shed. A small child was rumoured to have drowned in the creek during that time.

We have had the property for approx.. 18 years and in that time the following was completed:-

·         Extensive earth works to backfill and raise the level of the lower creek flood plain

·         Develop the 6 ponds to allow for freshwater aquaculture

·         Build the creek bungalow x 1; Create animal cages and runs,

·         Extensive renovation of the upper and lower house

·         Removal of oil palms and replanting of local hard woods & fruit trees

The transition to a home stay is fairly recent and working out well as can be seen with our guest reviews – We are glad to have the incentive to keep the house and facilities well maintained and clean while giving you the opportunity to share our lovely Thai experience.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are not a problem and are naturally controlled by the abundant birds (swallows) fish & frogs. We are rarely bothered by mosquitoes and sleep with open louvers without screens.

However we have had some guests who are very sensitive to mosquitoes and appear to attract them. Therefore guests who have problems with mosquitoes should be aware that the mosquitoes are more prevalent 1hr before dusk and 1 hr after dusk- In these times apply repellent and cover up as applicable. Infrequently we get a more mosquitoes than usual; due to favourable breeding conditions. These events are rare and last a few days.

We have mosquito spray; coils and repellent if required

Wifi

Wifi routers upstairs & downstairs – No passwords 35Mb/sec unlimited - Enjoy

Windows and Doors

Front and back doors - When we live upstairs, we keep the front & back doors open during day to allow cross flow ventilation – we would close these doors prior to going to sleep or leaving the premises.

Opening the kitchen louvres also promotes a nice breeze throughout the kitchen and dining room.

Bedroom doors should be kept closed from about 4:30pm to avoid the possibility of mosquitoes in the bedroom.

The bedroom door keys can be found on the TV cabinet

Complimentary Breakfast

We offer a complimentary breakfast consisting of

·         Orange juice ; coffee ; milk

·         Cereal; Muesli

·         Eggs

·         Bread;-Butter & Jam

·         Rice ; Noodles

·         Basic condiments including ; spices salt sugar etc

Note: -

·        Additional frozen meals / pies and menu items are available (in the freezer – check upper freezer drawer also) as per menu / marked prices

·         If you are running low on any items please let us know in advance

Wine & Beer

We offer Wine and Beer at bought price +5% as a service to our customers – Please keep track of your beer & wine consumption so we can append you bill.

Rubbish

There is no rubbish collection service, so we try to manage our rubbish as follows

1.    Recycle

Please recycle aluminium cans; steel tins plastic & glass bottles by putting them in the basket under the sink (Rinse first)

Clean plastic bags are put in the side board drawer for other uses & recycling.

2.    Organic matter;

Please put into the stainless steel “wet bin” for daily empting into compost & chicken run. (Please empty into our wet bin downstairs) Any organic matter such as vegetable peels & meat & fish scraps (No oil please)

Shell fish shells & crab shell etc - please try to separate – we throw them onto the driveway to allow the cars to crush the shells - free range poultry eat the grit & calcium.

Rubbish – Contaminated plastic; food wrapping and items not organic or recyclable – please put in the green rubbish bin; when full or in need of empting please let us know.

House Keeping

Our house keeper attends to the house prior to your arrival and usually twice a week during your stay. During that time she will clean kitchen/dishes; floors & bathrooms rubbish etc.

The bed sheets and towels are normally changed once /week. If you need a towel for the beach or creek just ask.  If you require more or less service – please let us know.

Aircons

Bedroom aircons are quite and effective – If you run the aircons please shut the bedroom windows and doors,. (Otherwise they will freeze up and you will have to stop and wait for the unit to unfreeze before becoming effective again)

Alternatively - open the windows (listen to the night sounds) and run the wall fan with timer cut out. The room fans have a timer feature which we find useful, because the warm humid nights cools markedly in the early am (1-2 am) and the fan air becomes cold.

Lights

We encourage the use of the outdoor flood lights at night – Please remember to turn them off prior to going to bed.

One light switch on the front terrace is marked “leave on“ this is auto off during daylight hours

Washing Machine

Please feel free to use the washing machine on the back terrace as you require. We do have a dryer function on our machine downstairs – just let us know if we can help with some urgent clothes drying. – There also is an a clothes iron available (somewhere)

Leisure Equipment

Bicycles

Bicycle use is complementary for Ecovilla guests – There is some great rides to:-

·         Sra Kaew ponds & cliffs

·         Thalen

·         Around NaiSa village

Kayaks

Kayak use is complementary for Ecovilla guests in the immediate area ie If you kayak all day in the immediate creek area and return the kayak to the rack when finished its complementary.

We charge a fee when we have to collect the kayaks from the one-way trips listed below

Trip a   150 Bht (1-2 kayaks)

Trip b   250 Bht (1-2 kayaks)

Trip c   500 Bht (1-2 kayaks)

Don’t go past the end of the medium trip (b) without prior planning; the next stop is Thalen which is ~5km further on, this trip has to be done in the correct tidal phase ie tide going out! - Normally our guests kayak one way - downstream to the road bridge (trip a) which is the end of the longtail boat navigable waterway; - where we will collect the kayaks in the utility. It’s a short walk back from the bridge/boat ramp (300m) but via the winding creek, it takes ~ 30min in the kayaks. See our route maps below.

a)    Short trip to bridge – creek is overgrown jungle with some obstacle’s (fallen tree’s) one way trip; downstream. We will arrange to pick up the kayaks at the boat concrete slip way 50m past the road bridge. Many longtail boats are moored at this location as it is the end of the navigable waterway with access to the sea.

b)    Medium trip to road/Hwy 4034 access – This trip allows you to experience the congested jungle creek then after the bridge (trip a - above) opens up to easy kayaking along a typical winding mangrove creek system, gradually getting wider as you go – this trip ends at the end of Road/Hwy 4034 where we will pick you & kayaks up.

c)    Long trip (6.5km) to Thalen (seaside) ~2.5Hrs on ebbing tide

This longer kayaking trip starts with the short / medium sections above (trips a & b above) - congested jungle and incrementally opening out to a salt water estuary - Take water and phone (We have a water proof bag if required) so we know when to pick you up. The end point of this trip is the start point for the Thalen sea-kayaking tours.

The sea kayaking at Thalen is famous for sheltered and shady mangrove tidal steams along limestone karst cliffs and canyons; so if you have enough time and energy left over; go for it.

Description: C:\Users\ad.inspection\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.Word\IMG_4839.jpg

Kayak Point at Thalen

The Thalen sea-kayaking tours usually start from around the public piers at Thalen and guests paddle across the waterway into a shady labyrinth of mangrove channels; pools & canyons. The tour can be guided (500bht) but we feel it is more fun to simply explore yourselves or follow the other kayaks. This tour is tidal dependant and can only be completed (full circuit) in peak tidal conditions. Ie upper reaches of the circuit become mud banks on receding tides. Note: Don’t display food or the local mangrove monkeys will become interested in you.

Gibbon (KaiYum) 2004

Species (White handed gibbon) inhabits local jungle areas

(Sometimes can be heard in the local hills)

Kaiyum is watching your every move - he is stimulated by arguments; laughter and attention – he will show off by doing what he does best – Agile gymnastics within in his cage. He is a wild animal so please don’t try to second guess his moods and intentions – he can move faster than you and is not shy to grab a dress or scarf. He shows particular attention to small children which he wants to hold & touch but we feel it’s just easier and safer to stay out of his reach.

Kaiyum Cica 2004

Kaiyum was bought to us after his mother was shot & eaten by a local rubber tapper who still lives nearby. He was offered around the neighbourhood for sale and if no one showed any interest he was headed down to the Ao-Nung tourist bars. We decided to intervene in his destiny and bought him off the hunter. He was about 3 months old. He was a delightful pet for 3 years then slowly started to mature and show aggressive tendencies – He used to be let out and roam around freely but as he matured - he became aggressive and territorial and we had to confine him. He is loved & spoilt with a good healthy diet which consists of tropical fruit; vegetables & leaves; + rice & cooked chicken + an egg a day. Also imported fruit (apples & grapes)

Kaiyum Cica 2004

Many attempts have been made to try and rehabilitate mature gibbons in Southern Thailand but they are very hard to rehabilitate if not impossible. In my opinion the gibbon rehabilitation centre in Phuket is not being honest with its advertised cause, and we know of a government centre in Phung-nga that reportedly has many gibbons kept in very poor conditions ie small cages. The public are not allowed to witness the poor conditions that these poor arboreal animals are kept in. The local government vet & staff have recommended KaiYum stay with us as his conditions are better than they can offer.

The stories of confined gibbons dying from sadness & confinement after their owners have discarded them when they matured, because they became too hard to look after; keeps me awake some nights.

Please don’t allow kids within reach of him and don’t feed him sugar sweets and fast food. Fruit and leaves is fine. – but what he really wants is attention.!

Shopping

1.    NaiSa Local Market (2.6km away)

The local fresh market is twice weekly (Approx. 2pm to 05:30pm) and worth a visit (Don’t go before lunch the sellers don’t arrive until after lunch)

·         Wednesday

·         Saturday

The market is good for fresh chicken; fish; vegetables; fruit; eggs; herbs and curry paste etc. Some limited beef and pork in a corner stall ie it is a local market. For some of our guests it was a highlight and they enjoyed both the interaction with the locals and cooking up the produce at home. There is no milk; bread; cereal; yoghurt; juice etc

2.    Makro Supermarket  (10km away) (Four ATM machines)

Makro supermarket is about 10km away on the main Hwy 4. The supermarket has the largest range of goods in Krabi and caterers to hotels and walk in customers. Some items only sold in bulk. If you need to go to Makro – Let us know - We will try to synchronise shopping trips to as we usually go at least once a week.

Beware there is set times to buy alcohol ie 11am to 2pm and after 5pm - the alcohol restrictions apply to Makro; 7/11; Big C stores etc but not the average corner store

3.    Local NaiSa Shops in the village (2.6km away) Two ATM machines – working more frequently these days

There are at least two shops in NaiSa village which have fresh food daily from the Krabi central market. It would be easy to pass by these shops and not know what they are selling so ask directions prior to shopping in the village – Local stores also sell beer & limited sprits. (Thai whiskey) which are not subject to the time restrictions listed above

Restaurants

We have a local man whose daughters and wife get up at 3am to cook a variety of Thai sweets (banana coconut sweet potatoes beans) etc and also prepacked lunch packs which consist of chicken rice; rice salad; rice soup and noodles etc. I don’t think there is anything more expensive than 25baht He comes at about 09:45 every day and sells his products from the back of a motor bike. His food is handy for lunch if you’re going to the islands etc. Chilli is normally separate so you can add to taste. We buy morning tea snacks from him for our labourers every day.

1.    Local NaiSa Shops  (2.6km away)

In the morning (early) in the village many stalls sell Thai sweets fried chicken and rice dishes

At lunch time there is some local shacks by the village cross road which sell good noodle and rice dishes, other shops do take away curry and typical Thai dishes (Sold in plastic bags)

See our village map for details.

There is no European style restaurant in the local village

2.    Thalen Restaurants (12 km away)

Thalen has some tourist style restaurants notably

·         The Terrace” which is popular for great views across Phung-nga bay during sunset          map co-ordinates 8.1735355,98.7493537

·         Many other thai style restaurants such as

o   Thalen seafood by the old pier

o   Nai Chong local family restaurant – Good quality local thai foods at the right price next to family mart

3.    Ao-Nung Restaurants (25 km away)

·         Hugh amount of tourist restaurants along the front beach (Inflated tourist prices)

·         Krua Thara at Klong Hang – Famous restaurant which was rebuilt after the tsunami – We are never disappointed when we go here but beware the words out – it gets busy           map co-ordinates 8.0471400,98.8002741

·         Ruantip About 13km away on the way to AoNung this restaurant is famous in town and this is the large newly opened version catering to the tourists Very nice setting on the creek with good food and fast service  We prefer to eat here than in AoNung                   map co-ordinates 8.0768592,98.8046465

4.    Khun Nims home cooking – See menu for choices (2 Hr notice for some items)

·         Chicken; pork & beef curry dishes

·         Fish; crab; prawns please ask Nim for availability / pre-order
